Obituary for WHITING

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Herbert R. Whiting, 78, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, October 3, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gwendolyn M. Whiting of the family home; daughters, Valerie W. Brewer of Heidelberg, Germany; Rebecca W. Sheppard and husband, Patrick of Ft. Worth, TX; Laurie W. Morgenstern of Ft. Worth, TX; son, Scott R. Whiting and girlfriend, Debbie Nix of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Stephanie L. and Kimberly W. Sheppard of Ft. Worth, TX; and Mark A. and Erik C. Brewer of Germany; a brother, Dr. Adolph M. Whiting and wife, Jeanne of Seattle, WA; and his beloved dogs, B.G. and Goldie. Lt. Col. Whiting was a member of ACICV. He served in the Philippines and in Occupied Japan from 1944-1946. He re-enlisted in the Army in 1948 and served continuously until his retirement in December 1971. His overseas duties included Iceland, Germany, Panama and two, one-year tours of Vietnam. During his years of service he earned two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Republic of Viet Nam Commendation Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. He was most proud of his Combat Infantry Badge. Lt. Col. Whiting's military career after WWII was devoted to Counter and Military Intelligence. The only rank he never held was Corporal. His children fondly remember the countless croquet, Monopoly, baseball and card games he played with them. In addition, they went on numerous fishing trips and golf excursions. Through these and many other activities, his children always knew they were loved. He was an avid fisherman and golfer who once shot a hole-in-one. Services will be Thursday, October 7, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P. O.
