Obituary for CHAVEZ

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday October 05, 2004

Clovis, Sr. At last, God took home his faithful son Clovis Chavez Sr. Clovis Chavez Senior, 87, a Peralta native, died peacefully in the loving watch of his family Friday, October 1, 2004. Clovis Chavez was a devoted member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and an outstanding member of his community. Clovis is well known for his valiant service to our country in WWII. He was captured in the Philippines in 1942, endured the Baatan Death March, withstood years of imprisonment, only to survive by the grace of God. He returned home to Peralta where he started a family and a legacy of community service. Clovis was the postmaster in Peralta for 25 years, and even ran the Peralta Post Office from his home. Clovis could often be seen taking walks in the Peralta area and at the Peralta Church, even enduring years of confinement arose from his struggles to be the most joyful, happy, generous, and loving man anyone could hope to meet. Clovis' most important and enduring legacy is his family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Remijo and Francisquita Chavez; his brother and sisters, Nestora Chavez; Proceso Chavez; Rafelita Baca; and Emma Gabaldon; and a little grandson, Florencio Clovis Chavez. Clovis is survived by his sons, Clovis Chavez Jr. and wife, Diane of Peralta; and David Chavez, also of Peralta. Clovis leaves behind his devoted grandchildren, Randy and Tammy Chavez; Greg and Maryanne Chavez; Melanie Chavez and fiancee, Francisco Enriquez, all of Peralta. Clovis is now watching over his beloved great-grandchildren, Julia; Madelynn; Joshua; Cienna; and Hayley who already miss him dearly. Clovis also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, all of which were very dear to his heart. As grandpa always said, "See you in the funnies on Sunday!" All services for Clovis will be held at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in Valencia beginning with a viewing on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Valencia Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Randy Chavez; Greg Chavez; Francisco Enriquez; his nephews, Charles Chavez and Michael Baca; and his good friend, John Bowman. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Gurule; Amador Griego; Clifford Brito; and Richard Baldonado. Romero Funeral Home 609 N. Main St. Belen 87002.
