Jose Manuel (Melo) Leyba, born July 5, 1923 in San Miguel, died August 28, 2004. Born to Guillermo (Willie) Leyba and Agripina Tapia Leyba and raised by (Stepmother) Luz Rivera Leyba, he was a WWII Veteran where he served honorably in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France, and the Rhineland. Following the war he worked with the joint United States - Mexican hoof and mouth program in Mexico, and then returned to the family ranch at Leyba, San Miguel County, New Mexico. He is survived by his sisters, Rose Valdez, Emily L. Tapia Montgomery, and Pina Ludi; and his nephews and nieces, to whom he was a second father. Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Parish Church, 5310 Claremont, NE. Mass of Christian burial will be held on a day to be announced at 9:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Parish Church in Albuquerque. Internment will follow at the family plot in Leyba.
