Lara Dyanne Powell, 26, died August 6, 2004, in Galveston, TX. She is survived by her son, Tristan Powell of Harlingen, TX; her brother, Sagan Powell of Albuquerque, NM; her parents, David Powell of Harlingen and Kathryn Watkins of Albuquerque; and her grandmother, Wilma Powell; and grandparents, Ralph and Mary Alice Powell. Lara was born on January 9, 1978, in Harlingen and attended St. Albans Elementary School, Memorial Junior High and Harlingen High School, where she excelled in swimming. She received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Texas at Pan American in 2003, graduating magna cum laude. She was working at the University of Texas at Galveston and planning to enter the graduate program in nutrition in the fall of 2004. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Graveside services will be held Friday August 13, 2004 at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes, TX. Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes. A private memorial will be held in Albuquerque at a later date. Donations to the Women's Community Association can be made in Lara's name by sending a check to P.O. Box 25363, Albuquerque, NM 87125.
