Andrew James (Jim) Avila died of heart failure on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the age of 45. A well-known rock musician, Jim played a mesmerizing lead guitar and sang a powerful, sweet lead in numerous local bands, most recently Trauma Unit. He organized musical benefits for the "Make A Wish" foundation and composed many songs. His talent and generosity were saluted on the radio station 94 Rock in an all-day tribute on July 22. Jim graduated from Sandia High School, Class of '76, and earned his associate degree in electronics from T-VI. He went on to become an electrical engineer. He worked at Siemen's in Albuquerque and later founded Modular Solutions, Inc. a company that designs robotic lighting. His line of lighting is manufactured in Florida, and both Universal Studios and Epcot Center use his lights. He also worked on various private and governmental robotic projects. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy Schiess Avila; by his daughter, Krystal Avila; his mother, Adelina Sanchez Avila; his sister, Luisa Ramirez; his brother, David Avila; nephews Gerald Parras, Jeffrey Avila and Christopher Avila; nieces Char Parras Schneringer and Kyndra Parras Vigil; his dogs, Blue and Red; and countless friends. A mass will be held on Tuesday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 31, at the New Life Presbyterian Church, 5540 Eubank NE (north of Spain) at 2:00 p.m. Please make contributions to "Make A Wish" foundation in lieu of flowers. Jimmy, you organize a rock band in heaven and we'll jam with you when we get there.
