Obituary for MCCONEGHY

Captain John K. McConeghy, USN (retired), passed away on Friday, May 21, 2004 after a valiant 14 year battle with cancer and more recently, Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Jean Marie (Jamie) McConeghy; son, John Patrick McConeghy; and daughter, Josie McConeghy Geissler and her husband, Patrick and their children, Christi, Sean and Alisa. Born on November 22, 1924 in West Point, NY, John attended Galileo High School and Drew Preparatory School in San Francisco, CA and was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MO in 1944 and following graduation in 1948 pursued a distinguished 30 year career serving his country in the United States Navy. After attending the U.S. Naval Submarine School, New London, CT in 1952, his significant duty stations include commanding Officer, USS Segundo SS 398; Co, USS Leonard F. Mason DD 852; Co, Destroyer Division 112; Co, USS Ponchatula A-0148 and Co, U.S. Naval Station Guam. His last tour of duty before retirement in June, 1978 was a s Deputy Commander, Field Command Defense Nuclear Agency, KAFB. He and his family have resided in Albuquerque since that time. John welcomed challenges and had many hobbies and interests, especially those associated with the outdoors which he cherished, appreciated and enjoyed to the fullest. He was a generous and loving husband, father and grandfather and was blessed with a creative mind and a great sense of humor. Our lives are forever enriched with his presence, his enthusiasm and his example. Our family expresses heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the caring staff of Lovelace Hospice and to our dear friends who are so gracious and thoughtful during this difficult time of loss.
