Obituary for JOHNSTONE

Bernetta Isbell Johnstone, born June 7, 1913 in Tatum, New Mexico, died May 30, 2004 in Denver, Colorado. Bernetta grew up in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. She earned an associate's degree from Wayland Baptist College in 1932, a B.A from Mary Hardin Baylor and Master's from Texas Tech. In 1936, she served as acting registrar at Wayland. For the next three years, she taught in the Business Administration division. In WWII, she enlisted in the Navy, becoming one of the first women officers in the Waves. She served in Washington D.C. writing and editing training manuals for the "Seabees." In 1944, she married Don Johnstone. For almost 50 years, she lived in Albuquerque, N.M. She was a teacher at Harwood Girls School, and was active in 4-H leadership, AAUW, Soroptimist International, and the Pan American Round Table. She was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. She is survived by seven children; and 15 grandchildren. Children are James Johnstone, Washington D.C; Robert Johnstone, Palo Alto; Will Johnstone, Denver; Donna Bearden, Rowlett, TX; Barbara Johnstone, Seattle; Richard Johnstone, Minneapolis; and Marji Johnstone, Gjovik, Norway. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
