Obituary for GREGORY

Adelaide Dorcas Self Gregory passed away Friday, June 4, 2004, in Albuquerque. She was born November 7, 1914 in Tupelo, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ross and Sabra Self of Portales; her husband, John Virgil Gregory, long time professor of education at Eastern New Mexico University, sisters Ruth Payte and Hazel Self of Lubbock, Texas; and by her three brothers: R.E. Self of Elida, Vaughter Self of Silverton, Texas, and Boyd Self of Alamosa, Colorado, all of whom were World War II combat veterans. She is survived by her four children: John of Salmon, Idaho, David and wife Allison of Santa Fe, Susan Gardenhire and husband Gene of Albuquerque, Sinda and husband Larry McCaffery of Borrego Springs, California; seven grandchildren: Rhonda DeHaan, Laura Gregory, Stacey Walker, Tiffany Andre, Mark Ross Urton, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kyle Hahn; daughters-in-law Rita Gregory and Valeria Allen; sisters-in-law Dollie Self of Elida and Audrey Gregory of Oklahoma City; four step-grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Adelaide graduated from Quitiquae High School, Quitiquae, Texas, as valedictorian of her class and went on to receive a B.A. and M.A. from Texas Tech University. She taught English in public schools for forty-five years, the last twenty-five of which were at Portales Junior High. She loved her students and strove always to guide them towards happy and productive lives. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portales. Upon her retirement in 1979, she continued a vital life enjoying weekly bridge games, daily walks, time with her children and grandchildren, community activities, traveling and her rabid devotion to the Democratic Party. Possessed of tremendous energy, she gave unselfishly to family, friends, and the Portales Community. In recent years she often let it be known that her one hope was to live long enough to see another Democrat in the White House. Pallbearers will be John Gregory, David Gregory, Mark Urton, Gene Gardenhire, Larry McCaffery, Guy Strunk, Bob Strunk, James Derrill Cody, Matt Ferguson, and John Gentry. Honorary pallbearers are Ocie DeHaan, Joel Ferguson, Dave DeHann, John Walker, Tim Andre, Joe Ross Self, and Joe Alan Self. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, June 7, 2004 at Wheeler Mortuary, 500 East Third, Portales, NM.
