Obituary for ROBINSON

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday May 28, 2004

Jack Thomas Robinson - Our beloved husband, father, son and brother, Jack, died at his home on Wednesday, May 19, 2004. He leaves behind a void that can never be filled. Jack was born Tuesday, February 24, 1948 in Greensboro, NC to Dr. Joe and Louise (Studdard) Robinson. Jack was a devoted father to his son, Jay Robinson, whom he loved deeply. The two would spend weekends in the family's 100-year-old cabin in Reidsville, NC, where Jack's heart was at peace. He loved the land and though he lived in California, Ohio, New York and finally, New Mexico, his home was always in North Carolina. In 1986, he met the love of his life, Joan Elizabeth Olstad, and Joan met the love of her life in Jack. They married Oct. 17, 1987 in Charlotte, NC. They spent 18 wonderful years together. Two chairs, two hearts, two souls. On the last night of Jack's life, they watched the sunset together and he held her hand until it was dark. Handsome, caring and gentle, Jack was always the one to take care of others, the first to volunteer to help, the first to lend a hand. When he took in a stray dog or cat, it was for life. He was the kind of man who would stop his car in traffic to rescue a turtle in the road. Jack attended and graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC with a B.S. degree in Business Management. By profession, Jack was a salesman. A go-getter, he worked for Sara Lee Corp., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., and Hot Wax Candle Co., among other companies. He was also a general contractor, quick with his hands and quick with a joke. Jack lived with a song in his heart. He loved the music of James Taylor, with whom he attended first grade in Chapel Hill, NC, and he would play Taylor's songs on his guitar. His favorites were "Sweet Baby James," which he dedicated to his son, Jay, and "Something in the Way She Moves," which he dedicated to Joan. Jack was curious about life. When he visited the Mississippi paddle wheeler, the Julia Belle Swain, he became a fast friend with her pilot. Jack was the captain of his life. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Joan; his son, James Christian Robinson ("Jay"); his mother, Louise Dabbs; his brother, Joe Robinson and wife, Sheila. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Joe Robinson. We send our wonderful Jack off with a final message to those who loved him and ask what they could have done: "Do not feel totally personally irrevocably responsible for everything. That's my job. Love, God." A memorial service for Jack will be held Saturday, May 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6901 Wyoming NE, with Pastor Erik Karas officiating. A memorial service in Jack's home state of North Carolina will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
