Obituary for MESSINA

Anthony J. Messina, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, March 18, 2004. He is survived by his spouse, Cosimina "Mae" Messina of Albuquerque, New Mexico; children, J. Anthony Messina and wife Shirley of Villanova, Pennsylvania; L. Michael Messina and wife New Mexico's Attorney General Patricia Madrid of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Paul Messina of San Francisco, California; grandchildren, Elizabeth Messina, Dr. Jennifer Sayre and her husband Dr. William Sayre, Giancarlo Messina, Christopher A. Messina and his wife Bethany, David A. Messina, Victoria A. Messina, Mariane Escalona Messina, Camille N. Messina and great-grandchildren Mykela Messina, Malik Messina, Tess Messina, William Sayre, Isabella Sayre and Lillian Sayre; and sister Margaret Ferreri of Long Island, New York. Mr. Messina was preceded in death by his former wife Antoinette Messina. Anthony known as Tony was a world recognized violinist, conductor and educator, a graduate of The New York College of Music, a BS and Master Degrees from New York University and his Ed.D from Columbia University. Tony performed with many orchestras including the New Mexico Symphony, even into his eighties. However he was proudest of his family and friends and his role as a teacher and mentor. He was a national officer of the American String Teacher Association and Editor of its magazine. Tony always made time for his commitment to helping others and was a Melvin Jones Fellow of the Lions Club recognized for his over forty years of service to their community activities. There will be a viewing from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at the French Mortuary, located at 1111 University Blvd. NE. There will be a Rosary on Sunday, March 21, 2004 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. also at the French Mortuary. A funeral Mass will be with the Father King presiding, located at 619 Copper Ave. NW. Interment will occur immediately following the mass a The Gate of Heaven Cemetery, located at 7500 Paseo Del Norte NE.
