Sylvia Smith Garrett, 93, died March 3, 2004, preceded in death by her parents, John Ross and Pearl Morris Smith; brother, Dr. Curtis Smith; husband, Dr. Paul Garrett; and granddaughter, Lorri Dreier; and survived by her sister, Betsy Ross Garrett; daughters and sons-in-law, Gaylia and Richard Wade, and Paulyn and Jerry West; grandson and wife, Rev. Christopher and Amy Dreier; and nephew and grandnephew, Gary and Blake Garrett. Sylvia met Paul in college--he a talented tenor and she an accomplished violinist. They married January 14, 1933, and taught in a one-room schoolhouse until Paul entered the ministry. They pastored in McAllen, Texarkana, and Houston, Texas, moving to Dallas and rearing two daughters. Paul was District Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene there, and Sylvia was the gracious and godly wife, mother, and hostess. The couple retired in Erick, Oklahoma; they had been married 64 years when Paul died in 1997. Richard and Gaylia brought Sylvia to Albuquerque to live with them. She next lived happily and well-cared for at Laurel Heights Alzheimer's Unit; for the last 3 1/ 2 days, she was lovingly supported at Lovelace-Sandia Hospice; now she is a permanent resident in heaven in the Presence of her Savior! Service will be Monday, March 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Aspen, Rev. Christopher Dreier officiating.
