Obituary for PRESTOPINO

Josephine P. Prestopino, 96, a resident of Albuquerque for 19 years, was born on September 19, 1907, and died on Saturday, February 28, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris; and son, Kit. She was born in Boston, MA, the only child of Giuseppe and Maria Panzica who were Italian immigrants. She was given the opportunity of an education and graduated from the University of Massachusetts class of 1928, with a degree in education. She married Chris Prestopino in 1934 and enjoyed a successful career teaching sewing in the New York City school system. When she and Chris retired from teaching they enjoyed 12 years together spending winters in Pompano Beach, FL and summers in Montauk, NY. They loved to travel and toured the U.S. and Mexico in their Airstream. They flew around the world but a trip to Italy to visit Italian relatives was a highlight of their travels. She moved to Albuquerque in 1984 after the death of her husband, Chris and continued to be a source of inspiration to her family. She maintained her own home until the age of 91 and her family will always remember her wonderful family dinners. She loved to sew and gave that gift to her daughters. Josephine is survived by her daughters Ann Silva and husband Don, and Rita Newman and husband Bill, and daughter-in-law Nancy Prestopino. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael Silva and wife Diane, Peter Silva and wife Kimberly, Steven Silva and wife Angelica, Nicholas De Candia and wife Rhonda, Donald De Candia and partner Marcie, Matt Prestopino, and Julie Prestopino and partner Ryan. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. NE, with Father Richard Olona, Celebrant. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Wednesday, March 3, 2004, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Josephine's name to the Cottages Education Fund, 3920 Juan Tabo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111.
