Obituary for SZERLIP

Dr. Eugene Poole Szerlip, 83, resident in Albuquerque since 1953, died at his home on Friday, February 20, 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Hildur C. Szerlip. He is survived by his dear friend, Joyce E. Van Dellen; son, Sigurd and wife, Patty; three daughters, Tami Szerlip and husband, Rod Johnson, Zita Szerlip and Wendy Sudduth and husband, Bruce; sisters, Janet Szerlip Harris and Martha Szerlip; as well as seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born in Newark, New Jersey, 1921, Dr. Szerlip graduated from Weequahic High School, Haverford College and New York University College of Medicine, 1946. He served in the Army Medical Corps, '46 -' 49. In Albuquerque, he was on staff at Presbyterian, St. Joseph's, and Memorial Hospitals, also working at Kirtland Air Force Base and the Veteran's Hospitals. He taught as adjunct at U.N.M. Medical School, was a member of the N.M. Medical-Legal Panel and a member of the Board of Blue-Cross Blue Shield. Dr. Szerlip received numerous honors for his service. Gene Szerlip was a meticulous and caring physician, a generous and devoted father, and an avid outdoorsman. His presence will be greatly missed. There will be a reception honoring Gene's life on Sunday, March 14, 2004 in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that remembrances be made to the Nature Conservancy, the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch or the charity of your choice.
