Obituary for SOMMERS

Richard E. Sommers (Uncle Rick), passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 9, 2004. Rick was born on November 26, 1949 in Los Alamos, NM to Robert S. Sommers and Yvonne G. Sommers. Rick was a graduate of Sandia High School. He was a member of Teamsters Local 492 for over 25 years and worked for Navajo, Yellow, and Consolidated Freightways. In 1991, he opened Uncle Rick's Pawn Shop in the North Valley. He operated his business from that time until September of 2003. Rick had two great passions in life - his family and his devotion to being a mason. He was a member of Temple Lodge #6, where he served as Assistant Steward, and Tyler. He was a Charter Member of Sandoval Lodge #82. He was active in the Ballut Abyad Shrine as a member of the Azayim and Loco Patrol where he had just been elected Brakeman. He also was the onion sales chairperson and on the Fez Committee. In all of his endeavors, Rick embodied love, friendship, compassion, and strength. His spirit will forever be missed and admired. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Norma Miera Sommers; daughters, Leann Sommers and Amanda Sommers; parents, Robert and Yvonne Sommers; brother, Sid Sommers and sister-in-law, Jackie, all of Albuquerque; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins of San Diego, CA, Bernalillo, Algodones and Las Vegas, NV. According to Rick's wishes, a Masonic service will be held Monday, February 16, 2004, at 3:00 p.m., at the Ballut Abyad Shrine Center, 6600 Zuni Road SE. Honorary pallbearers will be Sid Sommers and brothers-in-law, Duane Oja, Mark Anderson and Vernon Miera; also, Hank Paredes, Joe Hatchitt, Jeff Cohlmia, Michael Steinberg. Family will receive friends at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Sunday, February 15, 2004, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name will be accepted at: New Mexico Scottish Rite Foundation, PO Box 2024, Santa Fe, NM, 87504, to benefit the dyslexia fund for children.
