Obituary for CLEMENTS

Woodrow W. Clements, 90, of McIntosh, passed away on January 27, 2004. He was born on the family ranch in Corona, NM, on September 3, 1913. He was the youngest of nine children. In 1935 he married Jewell Sharp from Dexter, NM. They moved to Hondo, NM, where they both taught school in Lincoln County. They were married until her death in 2001. He was a graduate of Highlands University and later continued his education at the University of New Mexico. In 1944 he started at the University of New Mexico as a Physical Education teacher, and on to Professor and Basketball Coach. He retired from UNM in 1972. After retiring he and his wife Jewell moved to the family ranch at McIntosh, NM. He was very active in civic affairs, serving on the Board of Supervisors of East Torrance Soil and Water Conservation District, a member of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Assoc., Probate Judge for Torrance County, Executive Secretary of the HUB RC&D Council, Torrance County Planning & Zoning Board, New Mexico Governor's Task Force for Subdivision Regulations, member of Hope Medical Board of Trustees, member of Torrance County Senior Citizens, and an active member of the Torrance County Sheriff's Posse for many years. He is survived by his sons, Joe Clements and wife Stephanie of Gilbert, AZ, Bill Clements and wife Cookie, John Clements and wife Beth and daughter Judy Rivers all of McIntosh, NM, and a sister-in-law, Gayle Swearingen of Artesia, NM, 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are grandsons: Bill McDowell, Mike Clements, Joe Pat Clements, Tom Clements, J.W. Clements, Rob Clements, Jeff Sap, and Bob Sap. Honorary Pallbearers are granddaughters: Kelly Pennington, Julie Gay McDowell, Tina Cordell, and Tracey Emerson. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2004 at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty, NM. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Clements family cemetery, five miles west of HWY 41 in McIntosh on County Road A72 West Clements Road. Officiating will be the former Pastor, Peter Peterson and present Pastor, Linda Mizell.
