Obituary for URIOSTE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 25, 2004

Phyllis (Filomena) Barboa Urioste, 88 years old, was born Aug. 11, 1915 in Armijo, New Mexico, and passed away on Jan. 16, 2004 in Bloomington, California. She was born to the parents of Pedro and Manuel (Sanchez) Barboa. She had 6 brothers and 4 sisters. She married Manuel Urioste at the San Felipe de Maria Church in Albuquerque, N.M. August 20, 1933 and together they had 5 children, Martha Edwina, Robert Roland, Edward Lewis, Michael Thomas and Phyllis Vivian. She is survived by her 5 children, 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. Relatives and friends in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri and Nevada, countless to number, she impacted the lives of many people. She was a powerful woman, fiercely independent and of a feisty nature, but she was a loving, compassionate, strong woman, unafraid to display her passion in life. She loved her family, adored her grand children, great grand children and great-great grandchildren. She and Manuel moved to Carson, California in 1955. She worked hard as a meat wrapper in various grocery store chains and also became active in the St. Philomena Catholic parish. It was during her retirement years that she devoted her spare time in service to our Lord as a member of St. Vincent de Paul, the Pioneers, a minister of the eucharist, and service to retirement homes, and the needy. She touched the lives of many people during her service to the church. When she moved back to Albuquerque in 1995 where her husband was buried, she became active in the Queen of Heaven parish there in much the capacity she had done in Carson. Again, she touched the lives of many people in service to our Lord. She had her son and daughter and grandchildren and great grandchildren in Albuquerque along with her two sisters Mary and Gloria and many cousins. She moved to Rancho Cucamonga in 2001 where she resided with her youngest daughter. She attended Sacred Heart Parish. She loved using her time with her great-great granddaughter who had just been born shortly after she moved there. Phyllis always had time to give in helping others, both in her family and friends. As we reflect on how she touched our lives, we may ask a question ?What is our life like and how do we affect those around us?? Visitation will be held at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, January 25, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. until time of rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be on January 26, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors 3113 Carlisle Blvd. N.E. 884-1188
