Obituary for RUCOBO

Gonzalo Rucobo, born in Zacatecas, Mexico and former resident of the San Francisco Bay area, died January 20, 2004. A civil rights organizer for Chicanos in the San Francisco, California, Bay Area for many years, Gonzalo later worked for the State of California in the capacities of Consultant for the Fair Employment Practices Commission and Deputy Labor Commissioner. Gonzalo was active in the American G.I. Forum, LULAC, LASSO, MECHA, La Raza Unida Party, and La Raza Centro Legal, a nonprofit organization providing legal aid for Hispanics, which he helped found. Gonzalo graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Sociology and Chicano Studies in the late 1960's and received his Juris Doctor degree from Boalt Hall Law School in 1974. Since retiring in Albuquerque five years ago, he has served as stage manager for La Compania de Teatro de Albuquerque in eight productions and played a number of acting roles. He performed the voiceover for Senator Dennis Chavez in the video "El Senador." Gonzalo was also an avid songwriter. One of his songs about New Mexico hero Elfego Baca was performed by La Compania in 2003. Another song, "Nuevo Mexico," is an entry in a 2004 New Mexico song competition. Gonzalo is survived by his mother, Maria de la Luz Prieto; his sister, Gloria Taylor; his wife, Bonnie Rucobo; and his four children and their spouses, Monica and Ray Garcia, Michelle and James Mayse, Gonzalo and Lisa Rucobo, and Maria Rucobo. His grandchildren include Danny Torres, Manuel Torres, James Mayse, Phylicia Mayse, Janelle Rucobo, Angelina Rucobo, David Garcia and Maya Garcia. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren and a lilac-headed Amazon parrot. A Memorial Service will be held in El Salon Ortega at the Hispanic Cultural Center on Sunday, January 25, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to La Compania de Teatro de Albuquerque, P.O.
