Obituary for CABIEDES

Carlos Eduardo Cabiedes Andrade, 90, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Cabiedes was born in Ibarra, Ecuador on September 1, 1913. He lived in Quito, Ecuador until August 1958 when he moved to St. Louis Missouri at the invitation of the then, St. Louis Country Day School to join its faculty as a Spanish teacher. In Ecuador he was an educator. He taught several years in various elementary and high schools. His specialty was Spanish and World Literature. In 1942 he joined the faculty of the newly founded American School, becoming the first Assistant Headmaster in 1947 where he was instrumental in developing the school to be the first co-ed school and the top educational institution in the country. In 1964 he moved to Albuquerque invited to join the faculty of the Albuquerque Academy where he was a Spanish teacher until his retirement in 1982. In Ecuador he was a member of two prestigious Ecuadorian national professional organizations: Cuadernos Pedagogicos and Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana. Aside from his years as an elementary and high school teacher, Mr. Cabiedes taught Philosophy and Literature at the Universidad Central de Quito. In 1962 he was invited by Michigan State University to be part of a special training for teachers of foreign languages. The year after he joined the Summer Faculty of the same institution where he trained teachers in Methods of Teaching Spanish. Mr. Cabiedes is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lydia de Cabiedes; daughters, Mercedes de Sebbio and husband Roberto from St. Louis, Missouri, Alicia Cabiedes Fink and husband Herb from Brockport, New York, and Eugenia Cabiedes from Albuquerque; grandchildren, Steve Cabiedes and wife Kathy, Gisella Sebbio-Thomas and husband William, Andrew and Alex Fink, and Carol Cabiedes; and great-grandchildren, Joseph and Caroline Cabiedes. In Ecuador he leaves 17 brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church, 8901 Candelaria NE at 10:00 a.m. Internment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7500 Paseo del Norte NE.
