Obituary for BERGSMA

Norman E. Bergsma, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, died Monday, December 8, 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Kim Kerschen and husband, Bill of Albuquerque; son, Luke Black and wife, Linda Webb of Toledo, OH; and grandchildren, Nick Kerschen and Chad Kerschen, both of Albuquerque and Kathi Domalski, Bret Black and Marc Black, all of Toledo, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Bergsma in 1995; two brothers; three sisters; and his parents. He was an exceptionally loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Bergsma was born in Lafayette, IN, the youngest of six children. He was a veteran of WWII. In 1951, he married Mildred Robertson. Mr. Bergsma began his photojournalism career in Lafayette, IN, in 1945, with stops along the way in Cleveland, OH, Memphis, TN, Jackson, MS and St. Petersburg, FL, before moving to Albuquerque in 1970 to work for the Albuquerque Tribune as a staff photographer. In the mid 80's, he began working with the Bernalillo County Sheriff as a photographer, retiring in 1995. His love for photojournalism was an inspiration to those he worked with. He was always willing to help younger photographers develop their skills. Mr. Bergsma had a long distinguished photo career, winning many prestigious awards. Photojournalism was his love and one of his favorite assignments was covering the Cleveland Browns. Services will be held Thursday, December 11, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. Cremation will take place. French Mortuary 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE 823-9400
