Obituary for BATES

Frances Hope Louise Bleil Bates, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on November 13, 2003. Hope was born on August 26, 1910 in Dearborn, MI the second of seven children of David and Ella Bleil. She graduated with a degree in dietitetics from Michigan State University in 1936. She served as a food service manager for the Woolworth chain in West Virginia until her marriage to Donald E. Bates in 1939. When Don was called to service for WWII, she became a supervisor of the canteen and club house for over 5,000 employees of a West Virginia chemical plant. When Don returned from service, they bought a restaurant, but labor problems led them to sell and move to Michigan. She then returned to Michigan State University to obtain a teaching degree. She headed the cafeteria and taught at Sexton High School in Lansing, MI. She and Don built a beautiful home in Mason, MI, which they enjoyed for many years before retiring to Rio Rancho, NM in 1972. Hope was a gracious hostess and loved to entertain and share her cooking skills. Hope was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Donald E. Bates; sister, June Jerkins; brother, David Bleil. She is survived by her son, Charles Bates; daughter, Judy Landon; grandsons, John Landon Jr. and family, Joshua Landon and family; great grandchildren, Jesse, Nicole, Tyler and Elizabeth; sister, Ruth Richards and family; brothers, Marvin, Carl and Eugene Bleil and their families. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church (Coors Rd @ Paseo Del Norte NW).
