Obituary for WILKINSON

Linda Painton Wilkinson, 76, passed away on September 24, 2003 after a brief struggle with cancer. Born on August 21, 1927, she is survived by her husband of 46 years, Scott Wilkinson of El Paso, TX, two daughters, Jean Martinis of Boulder, CO and Ann Elizabeth Wilkinson of Los Lunas, NM, a son-in-law, John Martinis, two grandchildren, Scott and Stephen Martinis, two sisters, Mary Wall of St. Louis, MO and Christine Hodges of Oran, MO, one brother, Albert Painton of Painton, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Bess and Herbert Painton, and one brother, Don Painton, all of Painton, Missouri. Linda had a long and varied career as a teacher, secretary, craftsperson, and public servant. She started working in 1944 as a school teacher in Missouri, later moving to New York City where she worked as an executive secretary until her marriage. After their children were born, Scott and Linda moved to Albuquerque, NM where they owned and operated The Music Mart. Linda was an active craftsperson in the late 1970's and early 1980's, creating and selling hand painted ceramics in regional crafts shows and specialty shops. Before retiring, she worked as Chief Deputy County Clerk in Valencia County, New Mexico, and was elected to one term on the Valencia County Commission. Linda served in numerous civic, political, and church organizations in New Mexico and El Paso. She volunteered countless hours in organizations which assist the homeless and victims of domestic violence. Linda was also a past president of Keep New Mexico Beautiful, and an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. A Memorial Service will be held on at 1:00 p.m. on October 4, 2003 at University Presbyterian Church, 244 N. Resler Dr., El Paso, TX. Funeral arrangements by Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home.
