Ivan Ortiz, 49, died last week in Albuquerque. He was born on January 12, 1949 in Gallup, NM to Orlando Ortiz and Eliza Silva Ortiz, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Patrick Steven Bowers; by his wife, Susan Boot-Meyerer Ortiz; and her children, Cory and Kysa; by his sister, Stella Tafoya and her husband, Andy Tafoya of Colorado Springs; his brothers, Orlando Ortiz and his wife, Inez, Joseph Ortiz and his wife, Lucille, all of Albuquerque, and Mark Ortiz and his wife, Janet of Denver; and nieces and nephews, Shannon, Justina, Joel, Danielle, Alexis, Orlando Jr., Joey, Crystal, Marcos, Pete, Kristen and Monica; and great-nephew, Andre. Ivan graduated from Del Norte High School in Albuquerque and served proudly in Vietnam as a United States Marine. He had served as director of the Housing Assistance Council in Albuquerque and had been employed by the Bernalillo County Housing Division. Ivan is also survived by hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters at arms who shared the horror and pain of Vietnam and by hundreds and hundreds of friends and acquaintances for whom he had found housing, and who shared his love for music, sports, books and conversation. He continues his journey now in peace, a peace that seemed to elude him often in life. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE, with interment to follow at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Alarid, Ken Gattas, Tom Huffman, Gary Marin, Tim Padilla, Bob Porteneir, Don Vetter and Kenny Wright. Donations to cover medical, funeral and other expenses may be made to Patrick Bowers at P.O. Box 1610, Albuquerque, NM 87103.
