Obituary for Moya

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Monday May 11, 1998

Our tia Edith Moya, a life-long resident of Old Albuquerque, died peacefully in her ancestral home, Friday, May 8, 1998. A member of a Pioneer Family, Edith was the sole survivor of six siblings. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary Elizabeth Selby and Juan Andres Moya; her twin sister, Edna Chavez; sister, Nola Saavedra; and brothers, Jacob, Monroe, Luis and William Moya. Edith leaves a legacy of music, singing, performances, tape recording, alto solos at both San Felipe de Neri Church and St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. Edith was employed as the first elevator operator at New Mexico's State Capital Building. Later she worked for the State Land Office in Santa Fe. She retired early from Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque where she was known as"Edie". Her knowledge of guitar playing and singing took both Edith and her twin, Edna into performing at political functions, fiestas, dramas, theater stage presentations with Mexican actor Jose Mojica, Dolores Del Rio and singer Ana Cani of The Lawrence Welk Show. Edith helped to host the annual Drum and Bugle Corps Fiesta Band following the San Felipe Fiesta street processions. Edith was a member of the San Felipe Church, the Sacred Heart League and the Latin Choir under the direction of Eulogia Barreras. Her solos during Good Friday's PESAME and DESCENDIMIENTO DE LA CRUZ were taped recorded and will remain in the Moya Family Archives. Edith is survived by many nephews and nieces; her close friends, Winnifred Klimka, the Reverend Albert Gallegos; her caring nieces, Joan Renek, Gloria Morales and husband, Richard, Mary Wiley and many god-children. Edith treasured a photograph signed for her from the late President John F. Kennedy when he was on a presidential campaign at Sandia Labs. She cared for her parents and her aunt, Aurelia Moya in the Moya home until their demise. We remember aunt Edith with her great smile, teasing and incredible jokes. Auntie takes with her the rare gift of saying only good things about people. Among the unforgettable are her comments, following someone's cursing words: AY CHIYANDO VAN LAS BALLAS AND AY CHINITA POR TU AMOR. Aunt Edith may the angels and our father Abraham, and our mother Sarah, welcome you on your way. Love, Your Familia. Funeral services for Miss Moya will be held on Tuesday at the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at San Felipe De Neri Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society (San Felipe Church Parish). Arrangements by the Salazar and Sons Mortuary, 400 3rd St. SW.
