Obituary for Carr

Thomas Lyle Carr, M.D. was born February 23, 1918 in Antwerp, Ohio, the son of Thomas G. and Phoebe Smith Carr and had been a resident of Albuquerque for 46 years. He died May 8, 1998. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary F. Carr; sons, Thomas L. Carr and Susan of Englewood, CO, Terry L. Carr and Susan of Oklahoma City, OK; and daughters, Dee Anne Nyweide and Jack of Wilmette, IL, Catherine West and Richard of Davis, CA, Jane Jones and Paul of Buda, TX, and Mary Ellen Carr of Santa Fe, NM. One son, Robert Patrick Carr, preceded him in death. One brother, Richard Carr of Antwerp, OH, survives; his parents and a sister, Maxine, preceded him in death. His grandchildren include: Leanna and Charlie Berger, Kristin and Justin Nyweide, John and Sydney Carr, Sarah and Heather West, Shelby and Paul Jones. He attended school in Antwerp, OH, Miami University, Oxford, OH and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. He took his internship at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City and also his residency in Internal Medicine. He moved to Albuquerque in 1952 and was engaged in the practice of Internal Medicine until September 1988 when he retired. He was past president and secretary-treasurer of the New Mexico Medical Society and was a staff member of St. Joseph Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital and president of the medical staffs. He also served on the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph Hospital and many other committees. Dr. Carr was a Regent and Master of the American College of Physicians, as well as Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of Blood Systems, Inc. of Scottsdale, AZ. He belonged to the American Medical Association, Central Society for Clinical Research, American Association of University Professors, Society of Internal Medicine, and Albuquerque Armed Forces Advisory Association. He served on the Board of the Bernalillo County Medical Society, Blood Systems, Inc., and the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Carr received the Distinguished Internist Laureate Award from the New Mexico American College of Physicians and the Distinguished Service Award from the New Mexico Medical Society. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity. Dr. Carr volunteered with the UNM Medical School Admissions Committee, Blue Cross, New Mexico Regional Medical Program and the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners. Memorial Services will be Monday, May 11, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the Newman Center, 1815 Las Lomas NE, with Father Bob Keller officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Thomas Lyle/Mary Carr Scholarship Fund at UNM for medical students, UNM Development Office, School of Medicine, Medical Center, Albuquerque, NM 87131 in care of Mary Ellen Smith.
