Obituary for Carter

Dr. Genevieve W. Carter, 91, passed away at Lovelace Hospital on Saturday, May 23, 1998. She was born February 23, 1907 in Palestine, IL, to Lynn and Ida Mae Wiley. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Ann Alexander of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, John Alexander, residing in Florida, Brian Alexander, residing in Illinois, and Kathy Alexander, residing in Botswana, Africa; and a sister, Virginia Scott of Albuquerque. She married John Carter Esc. in 1934, who preceded her in death in 1972. She had an outstanding career in Social Services, the science of helping others. She graduated from UNM, followed by a Masters degree at Columbia (where she was thought a foreigner from NM) and a Ph.D. from U of C Berkley. She was the first juvenile probation officer in Albuquerque and also the first Special Education teacher in Albuquerque Public Schools. She was Administrator for Education and Social Services at Manzanar War Relocation Camp during WWII. She was the Director of Welfare for the City and County of Los Angeles and Professor Emeritus at USC in Los Angeles. She was Research Director of IIEW Washington, DC. After retirement she spent eight years in Albuquerque devoted to community service in the development of services for the elderly. She appears in the Senior Hall of Fame at the Albuquerque Convention Center. She was Board Chairman of the Office of Senior Affairs in Albuquerque and a member of the Governors panel on gerontology. She was the author of some 52 articles and six text books. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 2:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 924 Menaul NE.
