Obituary for Smith

Judge Wesley Reid Smith, 83, an Albuquerque resident since June, 1997, died Sunday, September 27, 1998. Judge Smith graduated from the University of Alabama, where he also received his degree in Law. At the University of Alabama, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and was involved with several orchestras, including conducting the Alabama Cavaliers. He was also a member of the University of Alabama"Million Dollar" marching band and Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity. Judge Smith was a Veteran of WWII, having served in the US Army Air Corps. He was a former member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis and Rotary. He was a member of the Alabama Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and was licensed to practice as an Attorney at Law before the Alabama Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. During his tenure as a judge, he served as a District Court Judge, Judge of the Talledega County Court, and Juvenile Justice Court Judge. Judge Smith is survived by his wife, Louise Smith of Albuquerque; daughters, Margery Smith Valliant and husband, Dennis of Albuquerque, Anne Smith Steidinger and husband, Warren of Birmingham, AL, and Suzan Smith Doidge and husband, Neil, also of Birmingham; grandchildren, Shelby Valliant of Nashville, TN, Denny, Bill and Kathryn Valliant, all of Albuquerque, Warren Steidinger Jr. of Birmingham, AL, Wendy Steidinger Register of Lucedale, MS, Jeremy Steidinger of Birmingham, AL, Anne Raines Doidge of Birmingham, AL; great-grandchildren, Wesley Register of Lucedale, AL and Jake Steidinger of Birmingham, AL. Cremation has taken place and memorial service will be held on Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Rev. Jim Massey officiating.
