Howard N., 56, resident of Albuquerque for the past 27 years, died at his residence on Saturday, July 11, 1998, succumbing to leukemia. He was a history professor at the University of New Mexico and a golf writer. Before moving to Albuquerque, he attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and continued to the University of Chicago to receive his Masters Degree and Ph.D. He was a Pulitzer Prize Nominee for Race Relations in the Urban South; Fellow, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences; Panelist; Golf Digest's"America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses"; In 1994 he received the Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America for :Race, Ethnicity, and Urbanization"; Member, Albuquerque Municipal Golf Advisory Board, December 1995-98, Vice Chairman, 1996; He was an Associate Editor with"American National Biography"; Executive Council Member, Souther Historical Association; Member, Western Social Science Association; Member, Board of Directors of Urban History Association, 1993-95; Member, Board of Editors, Journal of Urban History; Member, The Golf Writers Association of America, Golf Collectors Society, Organization of American Historians, the North American Society for Sports History. He is survived by his wife, Diane Wood; his daughters, Lorii Rabinowitz and Debbie Rabinowitz, of Albuquerque; his mother, Gertrude Rabinowitz, of Tamarac, Florida; numerous family members, friends, and colleagues from around the country. A Memorial Celebration of His Life is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 1998, at 1:00 PM at Strong-Thorne Mortuary"Palm Chapel" 1100 Coal Ave. SE.
