Edgar C. Bell, a long time resident of Grants, passed away Friday morning, October 8. Ed was born near Hereford, Texas but moved to New Mexico before entering grade school. He attended a number of New Mexico schools as the family moved often during those early years. In 1934 his family moved to Quemado where he attended high school. When WWII came, Ed enlisted to do his part. He joined the US Navy and served his country from May, 1941 - April, 1946. Most of his time was spent in the South Pacific. His work was in communications and the first message Gen. MacArthur received after the Philippines were retaken was from his outfit. When Ed got home in 1945 he was reunited with his family in Bosque Farms and joined the New Mexico State Police in June, 1946 where he served until December, 1957. During the period after this, he owned tow businesses, one in Grants and one later in Quemado. He returned to Grants in February, 1972 where he served as Chief of Police until April, 1982 when he retired. He felt police work was about the most important work a person could do. He often said that without policemen our country would be total chaos. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara, of the family home; two daughters, Carolyn Langendorf of Austin, TX and Kathryn and her husband, Ron Jones of Grants; one son, Steve Bell and his wife, Helen of Grants; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Lorene Henson of Hollister, MO, Betty Lou Felix and her husband, Jack of Montrose, CO and Jonnie Head and her husband, Milton of Milan, NM. Visitation will be Monday, 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. The Memorial Service will be Monday, 1:00 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Following the service, cremation will occur at Fairview Memorial Park Crematory in Albuquerque. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1330 San Pedro, NE, Suite 205, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
