Obituary for Harlan

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday November 18, 1999

Gregory James Harlan, a resident of Albuquerque, was born July 7, 1946, at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, the third child of Mr. Sessions C. Harlan Sr. and the late Mrs. Annie Dell Harlan. Greg passed away after a short illness at the age of 53 on Sunday, November 14, 1999 at the Lovelace Medical Hospital. Greg was a Veteran of the United States Navy, a retired City of Albuquerque bus driver, and a faithful member of The New Hope Missionary Baptist church since 1975. His membership with New Hope included his services on the Usher Board, a member of the Male Chorus, coach for both Male Basketball and Softball Teams, and was actively involved with the New Hope Women's Softball Team. Going Home..... Even while sick, Greg showed remarkable strength and courage. Because of his faith in the Lord, he carried the burden of his illness with dignity. He will be remembered for his Christian example, his good-hearted talkative nature, his kindness, and his sense of humor that touched so many lives. Greg was loved and will be missed by more friends and family than he, in his short life, could have realized. Greg will continue and will always be apart of our lives in spirit, in our hearts, and through our special memories of him that can never be taken away from us. He is survived by his wife, Sharon O. (Pat) Harlan; four children, Brian, Dera, Dante, Greta; six grandchildren; his father, Sessions C. Harlan Sr.; one sister, Paula R. Burgess; two brothers, Darrell T. Harlan and Sessions Harlan Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends. We thank all our friends and family who called and visited to express their heartfelt sympathies and to share their wonderful memories and love for him. Services will be held at New Hope Missionary Baptist church, 1901 Pennsylvania NE, on Friday, November 19, 1999. Visitation and viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107, 343-8008.
