Obituary for Hickson

Wayne W. Hickson Sr., 80, passed away peacefully Friday, August 27, 1999 in Albuquerque. Wayne was born December 15, 1918 in Mogollon, New Mexico to Philip and Alta Hickson, the fourth of five children. He married Jessie Lee Williams on October 22, 1942 and resided in Silver City, NM, where he was a business owner, served on the City Council, and became an active member of The Masonic Lodge A.M.&F.M. of the Free Masons of the State of New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 1st Battalion 41st Armored Infantry 2nd Armored Division in North Africa, Sicily and Northern Europe before being severely wounded in the Netherlands earning him the Purple Heart. He reached the rank of Sergeant. In February, 1952, Wayne and Jessie moved to Grants, NM, where Wayne worked for Anaconda Mining Co. and Kerr-McKee, as well as at Plains Electric with UA Local #412. Wayne was active in local politics, serving on the City Council of Grants. He helped form and became the First Worshipful Master of Grants Malpais Lodge #71 A.M.&F.M., where he remained an active member for 59 years. He was also a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple in Albuquerque. Wayne influenced the lives of many people and his family and friends who loved his fervor for life, his great sense of humor, and his kind generosity will miss him. Wayne is survived by his children, Karen Daniel and husband, Ben of Albuquerque, Wayne Hickson Jr. and wife, Pat of Duncan, OK, and Brad Hickson and friend, Julia Lopez of Grants; grandchildren, Cristy Moore, Seana Moran and husband, Sandy, and J. Waylen Moore, all of Albuquerque, and Philip Hickson and Jessica Hickson of Duncan, OK; great-grandson, Justen Moore of Albuquerque; sisters, Mary Ann Morgan of Albuquerque and Letha Warren of Ontario, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Wayne lost his beloved wife, Jessie in 1964; son, Jeffrey in 1997. He was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin; and his parents. Wayne was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting, and spent many hours in his jeep prospecting for minerals as an amateur geologist. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 31, 1999, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 1999, 10:00 a.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal SE. A graveside service will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery, 700 Yale SE. Pallbearers are Brad Hickson, Wayne Hickson Jr., Waylen Moore, Philip Hickson, Dr. Wayne Goforth, Dr. Phillip Goforth, Ben Daniel and Sandy Moran. Honorary pallbearers are members of Malpais Lodge #71, Grants, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following: Shriners Children Hospital Burn Center, 815 Market St., Galveston, TX 77550, Alzheimer's Assoc., 1330 San Pedro NE, #205, Albuquerque, NM 87110, or Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation/Hospice Fund, P.O.
