Obituary for Brown

Mr. Brown passed away Sunday, August 22, 1999 at a local care home in Topeka, Kansas. Glenn Franklin (Brownie) Brown was born October 25, 1909 in Emporia, Kansas, the eldest son of Frank Alvin Brown and Viola Cornelia (Chambers) Brown. He graduated from Miller High School, attended the College of Emporia, and was graduated from the Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University) in 1934, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity. He later studied at Stout University, Menomonie, Wisconsin. He married Florence Irene Guile in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, September 17, 1932. She survives. Mr. Brown was a teacher and coach at Melvern, Pomona and Mt. Hope, Kansas, high schools and in 1938 became Head of the Building Trades Department of the Argentine Vocational High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He joined the staff of Haskell Institute (now Haskell Indian Nations University) in Lawrence, Kansas in 1948, where he served as Head of the Vocational Department. In 1955, Mr. Brown transferred to the Albuquerque, New Mexico Area Construction Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and was Plant Manager of the 18 Indian Pueblos along the Rio Grande at the time of his retirement in 1972. Mr. Brown served in World War II in the Navy in both the Pacific and in the Aleutian Islands areas. He also served in the Korean Conflict as a Chief Petty Officer in the Seabees. Mr. Brown was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Albuquerque for 40 years and a Mason for 50 years. He was a member of Temple Lodge #6, AF&AM, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, both of Albuquerque, and Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Santa Fe, NM. He was one of the early New Mexico members of the National Federation of Retired Federal Employees and a member of Elks Lodge #461 and Kiwanis for many years. He was presented a Meritorious Service Award by the Department of the Interior upon his retirement. In 1991, he was honored to be named an Outstanding Citizen of Albuquerque by Woodmen of America for his contribution to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, having given some 80 hours of volunteer work each month for ten years to"The Storehouse." Mr. Brown was an ardent fisherman and was always greatly interested in sports, having played on championship football teams both at the College of Emporia and Kansas State Teachers College. He enjoyed coaching and coached a number of winning high school football and basketball teams. He was an enthusiastic traveler, and with his wife, traveled extensively, both abroad and in the United States. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry C. Brown, Dallas, TX, Wayne L. Brown, Descanso, CA; and one nephew, Robert Brown, Dallas, TX. He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Irene Hobbs and husband, Doran of Topeka, KS, Carol Florence Hunte and husband, James of Silver City, NM; one brother, Ernest G. Brown and wife, Jenny of Goleta, CA; two sisters-in-law, Melvina Brown, Dallas, TX and Dorothy Brown, Descanso, CA; one nephew, Richard Brown, Saugus, CA; two nieces, Kathryn White, Plano, TX and Evelyn Hammar, Goleta, CA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be tendered to the Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106 and to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, c/o Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni Road SE, Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Brown was cremated. No services are planned. Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 4020 S.W. Sixth Avenue, Topeka, Kansas, is in charge of arrangements. Interment of cremains will be at the Santa Fe National Military Cemetery at Santa Fe, NM.
