Obituary for Testman

John T. Testman, a resident of Albuquerque since 1930, passed away in Taos, New Mexico. He was born October 12, 1905 in Canyon, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Naomi Owens Testman; his second wife, Nell Heard Bibo Testman; his sister, Vega Testman; and a granddaughter, Roberta Garwood Scahill. He is survived by daughters, Theresa T. Garwood of Albuquerque and Svea (Peggy) T. Stevens and husband, William L. of Taos, NM; grandchildren, Billy Garwood and wife, Linda, Ted Garwood and wife, Diane, Richard Stevens and wife, Cydney, Johnny Stevens and fiancee, Patricia Cantrell, and Carin Stevens Anderson and husband, Eric; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-sons, John Heard and Pat and wife, Lorraine. He was a partner in the Huning-Testman Electrical Co. before WWII. His New Mexico National Guard Unit was called to duty in November 1941 and he served until December 1945. He was a charter member of the first Optimists Club formed in Albuquerque in March, 1940, called the Downtown Optimist Club. After WWII, he became a general contractor and constructed many churches, schools and commercial buildings. Later, he and Dub Underwood formed Underwood-Testman Construction Company and were the contractors for the College of Education Complex at the University of New Mexico and The Elks Club Building among many other fine buildings. In 1949, he served as President of the forming committees for what later became the Associated General Contractors and served as the first President of that organization in 1953. He was a member of Temple #6 of the Masonic Lodge which he served as Worshipful Master in 1954, the Scottish Rite Temple and the Shriners Club, served on the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, and belonged to several other clubs, including the Toastmasters Club and the Elks Club. The past decade he had alternated living with his daughters. Services will be held Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
