Obituary for Wichelns

Jean Frisbie Decker Wichelns, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1982, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999. She is survived by her son, Miles Wichelns and his wife, Phyllis of Sacramento, CA; granddaughter, Miranda Wichelns of Sacramento, CA; step-son, John K. Wichelns of Albuquerque; and six grandchildren by her step-sons, including Jan Cross and Ken Wichelns of the Albuquerque area. Mrs. Wichelns was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, in 1972, and her step-son, Lee Jr., in 1998. She received her B.A. as a Pratt Scholar from Adelphi University in 1932. She was a French government fellow at the University of Grenoble, France in 1933. She earned her M.A. from Yale University in 1943 and an M.S. from the University of Bridgeport in 1953. Mrs. Wichelns spent many years as a teacher and a guidance counselor before retiring in 1976. She was a recipient of the Croix de Lorraine, Maquis de Grenoble. Mrs. Wichelns was active in many organizations, including the National Society of Colonial Dames, and the National Society of Magna Charta Dames. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 9,1999, 10:30 a.m., at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 9315 Candelaria Rd. NE, with the Reverend Jan Butin officiating. Private interment will take place at Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
