Obituary for Helm

Lewis G. Helm, 82, a resident of Albuquerque for 32 years, died Friday, August 6, 1999 in Farmington, New Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty J. Helm; one son, Lewis C. Helm of Waukee, IA; daughters, Patricia Dailey and husband, Mike Dailey of Fairfax, VA, Jeannine Helm of Ames, IA, Gay Herrington and husband, Preston Herrington of Farmington, NM; grandchildren, Heather, Christopher and Luke Helm, Keary and Kate McHugh, Lacy Dailey, Sarah and Rachel Herrington; brother-in-law, George Hauff; and niece, Dottie Carlton of Chicago, IL. Mr. Helm was born April 24, 1917 in Arlington Heights, IL. He served in WWII as a navigator with the 14th Airforce Flying Tigers. He also served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Helm spent his career as a biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, retiring in 1982. He was instrumental in putting colored plastic bands on the necks of migratory waterfowl so a study of their movements could be made by means of binoculars. His hobbies included restoring Model A cars, travel, stamps, books, birdwatching, and being outdoors. A Memorial service will be held August 12, 1999, 10:00 a.m., at Hoffmantown Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any wildlife or environmental conservation charity.
