Obituary for Durrie

Elizabeth Browning Durrie, 51, of Washington, DC, died at her home in Georgetown after a courageous eight month fight with gastric cancer. She was raised in Albuquerque, graduating from Highland High and attending UNM for two years before transferring to, and graduating from, Santa Clara University in California. She was most recently the two-term past President and longterm board member of St. Francis Center for loss and bereavement. She was also a dynamic and tireless fund-raiser for the scholarship and development programs of her children's schools in Washington, the National Cathedral School, and the Maret School. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Georgetown, Pi Beta Phi sorority while at UNM, the Junior Leagues of New York and Washington, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of Kenwood Country Club where she played competitive club tennis; she was an accomplished athlete and avid fan. Survivors include her husband of 30 years, J. Nicoll Durrie Jr. (also raised in Albuquerque); two children, Justin Durrie of Portland, OR and Kyle Durrie of Brunswick, ME; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Browning Jr. of Little Rock (and Albuquerque for 40 years); and two brothers, George W. Browning III and Edward C. Viereckt, both of Baltimore. Memorial services were held June 15 at Christ Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Elizabeth Durrie Fund at the St. Francis Center, 4880A MacArthur Blvd. NW, Washington, DC 20007.
