Obituary for Gilliland

Paul E. Gilliland, Lieutenant Commander, USN (Retired), a longtime Albuquerque resident, died January 8, 1999, at his home. Paul was born in Franklin, Missouri in 1929 to the late George and Frances M. Gilliland. Immediately after graduating from Sts. Peter and Paul High School in 1946, he entered the United States Navy. He served as a Storekeeper in the occupation forces in the Pacific, and continued his enlisted service to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He earned his commission in the Supply Corps in 1960 and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander before retiring to Albuquerque in 1974. LCDR Gilliland earned numerous military decorations throughout his career, including the Meritorious Service Medal. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Isabelle Stockdill, a native of Albuquerque. Also surviving are five sisters, Gertrude Klenklen and her husband, frank of Boonville, MO, Kathleen Young, of Pilot Grove, MO, Anne Aho, of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, Georgia Sydlowski and her husband, Eugene of St. Louis, MO, and Bertha Mansfield of Raytown, MO; seven children, Mark Gilliland, Terrance Gilliland and his wife, Lois, Shawn Gilliland and his wife, Kathleen all of Albuquerque, Patrick Gilliland, of Chicago, Carmel Chapline and her husband, Michael, of San Antonio, Mary Erin Grosso and her husband, Michael of Molesworth RAF in England, and Mary Celeste Bradley and her husband, Charles of Rapid City, SD, and 10 grandchildren, Heather, Leah, Bryan and Conor Gilliland, Karen, Andrew, and Michael Chapline, Mikaela Grosso, and Jacob and Jeffrey Bradley. Visitation will be from noon to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13 at Strong-Thorne's Palm Chapel, with recitation of the Rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Thursday, January 14, at 10:00 a.m., with Father Michael Cimino officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark, Terrance, Patrick and Shawn Gilliland, Michael Grosso and Charles Bradley. Michael Chapline will be honorary pallbearer. The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis, TN 38105. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave SE, in charge of arrangements.
