Obituary for Colombo

Robert R. Colombo, MD, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1983, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 1999. Dr. Colombo was born September 21, 1910 in Brooklyn, New York. He was a General Practitioner who graduated from Long Island College of Medicine in 1933. He met his wife at the Kellogg Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan during WWII. He served as a physician with the rank of Captain during WWII, treating German and Italian prisoners of war. He practiced family medicine in Brooklyn, New York for 50 years on Avenue X. He was an old fashioned doctor who made house calls, delivered thousands of babies, cared for and assisted in operations for his patients. He volunteered with his wife at the Indian Health Clinic at Santo Domingo and San Felipe Pueblos. He will be remembered for his vast knowledge and his many stories of the Army, his youth in Coney Island, and his days as Boy Scout Troop Doctor. He spoke fluent Italian and Yeddish and was dearly loved by all who knew him. Dr. Colombo was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce M. Colombo in 1998. He is survived by his daughter, Claire A. Colombo, MD and husband, Ron Yestrebi of Rio Rancho; sons, Robert R. Colombo of Ridgewood, NJ, William J. Colombo and wife, Sheila of Gibsonia, PA; grandchildren, Michael and David Haugh, Rachel Yestrebi, Elizabeth Colombo, Ryan, Sean and Connor Colombo; three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 5, 1999, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, February 6, 1999, 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho with the interment to follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park.
