Obituary for Sekot

John Maximilliano Sekot, 85, a resident of Albuquerque for 49 years, went to be with our Lord, June 3, 1999. He is survived by his loving wife Anita Valdez Sekot. John and Anita married on March 1934. Surviving are two sons: Joseph and wife Mercy Sekot, Johnny and wife Rickie Sekot, four daughters: Marie and husband Robert Martinez, Angela and husband Philip Ballengee, Jeannie and husband Maurice Mackey and Loretta and husband Levi Duran. John was blessed with 17 grandchildren-Steven Sekot, Yvonne Lindsay and Joseph Sekot; Fred Sekot, Cheryl Parks and Shelly Allenbach; Robert McGrew, Martin Martinez, Michael Martinez, Kathy Gunderson and Christine Woisin; David, Nicholas and Victoria Ballengee; Anton Mackey; Danielle and Levi J. Duran. John is survived by three brothers-Matias, Victor and David Padilla; two sisters-Grace Britton and Martha Benjamin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fidel and Blas Padilla. John is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. John was born in Dawson, New Mexico, once a thriving coal mining town. He was born to John and Marianna Sekrotes on May 29, 1914. His parents were married in Las Vegas, New Mexico at Our Lady of Sorrows Church August 23, 1913. John Sekrotes, a Greek immigrant, came to New Mexico to work in the coal mines. Mr. Sekrotes died on October 22, 1913, in one of the nations worst coal mine explosions. After the fatal mine explosion, his mother married Victor Padilla. Subsequently, John was raised by his grandparents-Epifanio and Gregoria C de Baca. Eventually, John followed his fathers footsteps and became a coal miner. After the coal mines closed in 1950, John and Anita moved their family to Albuquerque where John worked at ACF Ind., finally retiring from General Electric in 1976. After John's retirement, he spent his time enjoying his family, working sports pools and developed a passion for crossword puzzles. Visitation was on Sunday, May 6, 1999, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at Sandia Funeral Care. Rosary followed on Sunday, May 6, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming Blvd., NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be today, May 7, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Risen Savior, with the Rev. Paul Baca officiating. Serving as Pallbearers will be; Steven Sekot, Joey Sekot, Freddie Sekot, Martin Martinez, Michael Martinez, David Ballengee, Nicholas Ballengee, Anton Mackey and Levi Duran. Interment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetary. Arrangements are under the direction of Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd., NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109; 821-0010.
