Obituary for Berdine

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday July 27, 1999

Frances Gaunce Berdine, 88, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1972, died Sunday, July 25. She is survived by her husband, Denis Berdine; her daughters, Patricia Magyary of El Cerrito, CA and Karen Caldwell of San Rafael, CA; and her grandson, Chris Magyary of El Cerrito, CA. Born in Walla Walla, Washington, she received her B.A. from Whitman College and her M.A. in history at UC Berkeley where she was also a doctoral candidate. She and her first husband, Harold Gaunce, lived in El Cerrito for 25 years where they raised their family and where she was active in local and state politics. An inveterate reader fascinated with other cultures, she spent many years as a world traveler. Acutely interested in current events and international affairs, she also had a deep love for animals and the environment. During her marriage to Denis, she appreciated the company of their many friends and family. In her later years, she continued to enjoy the views from her windows of Sandia Peak and the vast, everchanging New Mexico skies. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Joseph Medical Center or Presbyterian Hospice of Albuquerque.
