Obituary for Moore

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday July 23, 1999

Harold (Hal) Moore passed away July 19, 1999 of a sudden heart attack. Hal was born in Montrose, Colorado on November 29, 1923, son of Floyd L. Moore and Ella Hubbard Moore. He grew up in Montrose on a farm and sheep ranch, and was a high school athlete. He was a Navy pilot in World War II, 1943-46. Hal married Shonny Hershfield in Chicago in 1949. He received an A.M. degree in English Literature from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. He taught at the University of Iowa, then moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he taught for four years at the University of Colorado. Hal then moved to Salt Lake City, where he taught for 35 years at the University of Utah. At Utah, he founded the Graduate Creative Writing Program, directed it for many years, and taught in it until his retirement. He also served for some years as the Director of Graduate Studies for the English Department. Hal was regularly noted for his teaching skills and for the understanding and excitement he generated among his students. He loved teaching, too much. Loved books, loved words. And he loved to write. Hal was the author of numerous short stories and novels, many of which were published. He loved music, painting, sculpture--all art. Loved the mountains of Western Colorado, the slick-rock desert of Southern Utah, the skies of New Mexico, the beautiful blue world. He had gentleness of spirit, humanity, and decency of the highest order. He loved the world, loved his friends, and above all loved his wife, Shonny, his children, and grandchildren with boundless affection and joy. Hal is survived by his wife, Shonny; and by his children, Jeffrey and his wife, Susan Walters and their two children, Cassidy and Dylan, in New York City; Lisa and her husband, Joseph Losi and their two children, Nicolas and Jake, in Seattle; Carla and her husband, Ted Allen and their two children, Henry and Lucy, in Oakland, California. Also by his brother, Frank of Portland, Oregon; his sister, Ruby of Montrose, Colorado; and his brother, Danny of Tullahoma, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; and his sister, Margarite Nusbaum. A Memorial celebration of his life will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque on Friday, July 30th, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may donate to Chamber Music Albuquerque, the American Civil Liberties Union, or to a charity of their choice.
