Obituary for Abrums

Dr. John Denise Abrums, 75, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 1999. Dr. Abrums was born in Trinidad, Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado, Medical School. He had lived and practiced medicine in Albuquerque since 1949. Dr. Abrums retired from private practice specializing in Internal Medicine in 1995; he was affiliated with St. Joseph's Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Center, and the University of New Mexico Hospital. He had currently been the Medical Director for Turquoise Lodge. He was past President of Bernalillo County Medical Society, New Mexico Medical Society, New Mexico Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Society of Internal Medicine. In 1997, Dr. Abrums earned the Laureate Award of the New Mexico Chapter of the American College of Physicians, presented annually to a physician who has contributed significantly to the medical community and to the field of Internal Medicine over the years. He was on the faculty of the UNM School of Medicine, and a member of the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners. He also held membership in and was often a key leader in the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Federated Council of Internal Medicine, The Ancient Elliptical Order of the Alligator, and the National Academies of Practice (Medicine). Dr. Abrums also served as a medical officer in the US Army. He later remained active in the US Army Reserves until he retired with the rank of Brigadier General. John and his wife, Louise have traveled the world extensively and are longtime collectors of antique cars. Dr. Abrums is survived by his wife of 52 years, Louise M. Abrums, retired owner of Brandywine Galleries; children, John E. Abrums and his wife, Laura of Chimayo, NM and Louanne and her husband, Wally Sargent of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Dana, Ely and Rachel Abrums of Chimayo, NM and Gabriel Abrums of Taos, NM, Kristin Sargent of Vista, CA and Adam Sargent of Santa Fe; as well as sister-in-law, Faye Underwood of Albuquerque; and numerous other relatives and friends throughout the United States. A Memorial celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, July 22, 1999, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE, Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The John D.
