Obituary for Vanover

John Vanover Sr., age 88, went to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, March 14, 1999, at home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Monroe and Cassian (Ritchie) Vanover and son, James Mark, and by eight sisters and one brother. He was married to his wife, Viola Hubbard Vanover for 63 years and six children were born to them, Elizabeth Joan (Mrs. John M. Roberts), Phyllis Jane (Mrs. Wayne Costly), John Paul Vanover Jr. and wife, Isabel, Mary Fayle (Mrs. Roger Maggard), Deborah Lynn (Mrs. David Standfier) and James Mark who died at 15 years of age. He leaves 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren and many loving friends. Mr. Vanover was born in Pound, VA in 1911 and grew up in McRoberts, KY. He joined the Army at 15 and was stationed in China for the last part of his service time. He moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and became a mason-builder. The family will welcome friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Services will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church at Carlisle and Silver SE at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be grandsons Andrew and Christopher Skinner and Bill, James, Steve and Michael Vanover. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE, in charge of arrangements. .DMP
