Obituary for Vollmar

Marva Bailey Vollmar, beloved mother, sister, and friend died, Thursday, February 11, 1999 at St. Joseph Northeast Heights Hospital. Marva's heart finally gave out after many years of health problems-most of which seemed to barely hinder her myriad activities and energy. She is survived by her daughters, Dara Gay Shaw and husband, Greg of Morgantown, WV and Pari Lisa Noskin-Taichert and husband, Peter of Albuquerque; sister, Gloria Frazin and husband, Lawrence of Buffalo Grove, IL; sister-in-law, Bernice Kravitz; grandchildren, Korinna Shaw and husband, Anthony Lemon, Abdias Shaw, Moira Shaw, Hope Taichert and Lily Taichert; dearest friends, Kathy Cain, Mary Ann Wilson, Al Solomon and other close friends; and loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Vollmar was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Vollmar, Jr.; and brother, Harvey Kravitz. Marva was an extremely intelligent and unique person. She had a fighting and fiercely independent spirit that enabled her to survive several profound sorrows in her life. Mrs. Vollmar had an innate sense of beauty, a keen eye for finding"treasures," and a deep appreciation for creativity. Marva befriended several artists, owning and operating three galleries for several years. A self-educated expert on Asian art, she took great pride and pleasure in her own museum-quality collection. Her knowledge of Asian art was recognized and she was an active appraiser of collections throughout the state for years. She also studied to be a gemologist. Earlier in her career, she earned her broker's license. Marva was a loyal and devoted friend to many people. Marva had a highly developed sense of duty which manifested in her service and generous donations to education and the arts. Marva was a past president of the board of New Mexico Goodwill Industries and served for many years on the former June Music Festival Board. Among the non-profit organizations she actively supported are: Planned Parenthood, Albuquerque Museum, Jewish Federation of Albuquerque, Animal Human Society, KNME, Lobo Club, Multiple Sclerosis, St. Martin's Hospitality, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, and the US Holocaust Museum. She also endowed four scholarships at the University of New Mexico, three in the Department of Fine Arts and one at the Business School. Memorial services celebrating her life, will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, with Rabbi Joseph R. Black officiating. Interment has taken place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
