Obituary for Bissell

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday May 20, 1999

Elizabeth Rose Ochoa Bissell suffered a stroke on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 and died at home on Monday, May 17 under the care of her daughters and hospice staff. Those who will remember her with love and admiration are her four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Charles Wohlenberg, Sally and Gilbert Quintana, Denise and Jason Kent and Wendy and Barney Fuller; her precious grandchildren, Julia, Jacob, Carson and Spencer; her mother, Rose Ochoa; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Josephine Kuntz, Margaret and Ed Siel, Helen and Steve Shea and Marie and Quinn Matthewson and her many nieces and nephews. Liz was preceded in death by her husband, James Edwin Bissell; father, Henry Ochoa; and brother, Henry Ochoa Jr. She will also be remembered fondly by her many kind friends and neighbors. Liz was born on January 23, 1926 in Otis, CO. She was a high school basketball all-star and as a young woman in the 1940s contributed to the war effort as a airplane riveter for the Boeing Company in Seattle, WA. Among many other interesting jobs throughout her life, she especially enjoyed her time as a legal secretary for the New Mexico State Public Defenders Office. She was also a wonderful seamstress who kept children, grandchildren and other family members well clothed. She always felt her greatest joy, however, was raising her children and grandchildren. After her husband's death in 1995, Liz remained active with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. We will always remember her as an extremely kind and tolerant woman. She loved people and always had a big smile and a ready laugh. She had lots of love to give and would easily do anything for her family and friends. As a childhood friend once said of her,"You know, Liz never knew a stranger." We can't begin to say how much we love her and will miss her. A viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 at French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 21, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE, at Claremont. With reception following at the Church's Community Center. Liz will be buried next to her husband, Jim at Santa Fe National Cemetery on May 21 at 2:00 p.m.
