Obituary for Gibbon

Mary G. Gibbon, 99, a resident of Albuquerque since 1981, died April 19, 1999 at Trelux Manor Shelter Home where she had been cared for over the past four years. She was a native of Pittsburgh, PA from birth until she moved to Solon, OH in 1975. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Master's degree in Education (Sciences) and a lifelong member of Tri Delta Sorority, began a teaching career in Biology at Baldwin Whitehall High School where she taught for 25 years. Mrs. Gibbon also taught a Sunday school class at Union Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, PA. For 50 years, beginning when she was 14, and the class is named in her honor. While in Solon, OH she helped organize a Senior Citizens chapter, serving on the steering committee. At the age of 80, Mary taught a class for Senior Citizens in Functional Anatomy at the Elders Campus at Cuyahoga Community College, in Cleveland, OH. While in Albuquerque, Mrs. Gibbon was active in the Palo Duro Senior Center and the Church of the Good Shepherd (United Church of Christ). Until her death, Mary was the oldest living member of that church. She is survived by two daughters, Martha Houldsworth and husband, Howard, of Albuquerque, Mary Lou Waltz and her husband, Donald of Mission Viejo, CA; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three step-grandsons and their families. A memorial service will be held for her on Sunday, May 16, 12:00 noon, at the Good Shepherd Church (7834 Tennyson St. NE) the Rev. Stephen S. Halstead, officiating. Inurnment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, OH on June 18th.
