Obituary for Groff

Ted Groff, founder of Groff Lumber Co. and longtime Albuquerque resident, passed away Easter Sunday morning. Ted was 92 years old and in good health when he passed away. He was born in Bakersfield, Missouri in 1906. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he met his future wife, Christine Johnson. They were married 57 years. Ted started Groff Lumber Co. in August of 1950. He and Christine ran the lumberyard until 1978 when his sons, Richard and Wendell began running the yard. Ted then ran railroad crosstie pick up jobs in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah and several locations in New Mexico. Ted is survived by his family, Richard and June Groff, Wendell Groff and Alice Lambert; his grandchildren, Lara Groff, Neal Ambrose, Felicia White and Todd White; great-grandson, Javier Ambrose. Ted Groff was an entrepreneur who lived by the sweat of his brow and the quickness of his mind. His word was his bond. HE WILL BE MISSED. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 7, 1999, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 1999 at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE, in charge of arrangements.
