Obituary for Nunn

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday April 02, 1999

Frankie Mae Nunn, 98, a resident of Albuquerque for 11 years, died Friday, March 26, in her own apartment at Manzano del Sol retirement center. She lived at Plaza del Monte in Santa Fe for eight years before moving to Albuquerque. According to the Virginia Historical Review, family lineage on her mother's side traces back to Pocohontas and Powhatan. Frankie Mae was born in Indian Territory of Oklahoma, where her father was a circuit-riding missionary to Native Americans. Most of her early years were spent in Texas, where she graduated from Hereford High School and from Trinity University, then in Waxahachie. Frankie Mae married the Rev. Roy T. Nunn in 1925 and they spent 66 years together before his death in 1991. Much of their ministry was in SW Missouri and in Oklahoma, where their service included working with Cherokee Indians. In 1995, the Park Hill, OK, Presbyterian Church held a celebration in honor of Frankie Mae's service to the church and community of Park Hill. Attendees from several states had been young people whom Frankie Mae had served in the 1930's. She was preceded in death by her husband; by her only son, Tom in 1943; and by a grandson, Bruce Voorhees in 1992. Survivors include her daughter, Loretta (Lori) Castle and husband, Jack of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Betsy Christensen and husband, Dana of Los Alamos; grandson, Ron Voorhees and wife, Janet of Santa Fe; great-grandsons, Dane and Colin Christensen of Los Alamos; sister, Loretta Wilkinson of Pryor, OK; brother, Paul Baker and wife, Kitty of Waelder, TX; and sister-in-law, Eileen Nunn of Coppell, TX. She is also survived by five step-grandchildren and their mates; and by ten step-great-grandchildren. These include John Lee Castle of Edgewood and wife, Leota Harriman and their four children, and Bruce Castle of Albuquerque and wife, Paula. She loved them all. The family appreciates the many fine homemaker aides, coordinator, and nurses who have served Frankie Mae during her final months of life. Sunrise Cremation Society is serving the family of Mrs. Nunn. A memorial service will be held at Manzano del Sol, 5201 Roma Ave. NE, on Monday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Frank Yates of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lars Hamerson of Manzano del Sol. Memorial donations may be made to Manzano del Sol Special Fund, 5201 Roma NE, Albuquerque 87108 or to Menaul School Scholarship Fund, 301 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque 87107. Interment of ashes will be in Waxahachie, TX with graveside services conducted by the Rev. Owen McGarity of Gonzales, TX.
