Obituary for Chavez

Melquidez (Melyboy, Mel) A. Chavez, 59, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, after many courageous years of battling heart disease. The family was one of the first families to settle in the New Mexico territory. He was preceded in death by his father, Melquides N. Chavez; his paternal grandparents, Melquides and Maria Chavez; maternal grandparents, Michael and Magdalena Luchetti. Survivors include mother, Norma L. Chavez; sister, Frances Maldonado and husband, Tony, their children, Raymond, Joseph, James and Matthew. He is survived by his children, Deborah Chavez-Kennedy and husband, Michael, Diane Chavez-Garcia, Mark Chavez and wife, Maribel and Juli Chavez; grandchildren, Nichole Garcia, Michelle Kennedy, Angelo Garcia, John Kennedy and Ivan Chavez. Also included are his ex-wife and mother of his children, Lucille Hendren. Other survivors are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, foster children, whom he raised as his own, and many wonderful friends. His lifelong mission was loving the Lord and helping others. In doing so he built the facilities of"Villa Santa Maria" Boys home and ran it along with his family for two years. He was a resident of the"Christo Rey Community", counselor for many years with"Drug Addiction Rehab Enterprises", worked as a counselor at"Nazarene Bible College". He spent his entire life mentoring, helping, supporting and loving many people in their quest for a better spiritual life. He gave all to those involved in his life total commitment, understanding and forgiveness. Viewing will be held at the Albuquerque Bible Church, 320 Montano NW, Saturday, April 3, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Services will begin also at 4:30 p.m. All arrangements by Direct Services, 343-8008.
