Obituary for Gentry

Johnnie M. Gentry, 79, a longtime resident of Belen, passed away on Monday, April 12, 1999 at her home in Rio Communities after a short illness. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Belen, the Pilot Club of Belen, and greatly enjoyed bowling at Sugar Bowl Lanes with the Belen Bowling League. She and her husband, V.C. (Shorty) Gentry, came to Belen in the early 1940s so that he could work for the Santa Fe Railroad which he retired from after 36 years. They resided on Michigan Street in Belen's Old Town where Johnnie lived for 53 years until moving to Rio Communities. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her two sons, Johnnie worked for 19 years at Kotch's Cafe on Main St. She then worked as a department manager at Becker-Dalies. After Becker-Dalies closed, she worked until her retirement at Billie's Fashions. She was preceded in death by her husband, V.C. (Shorty) Gentry. Johnnie is survived by her two sons, Jerry Gentry and former state representative, Ron Gentry; ten grandchildren, including Cliff Gentry and Tammy Gentry Bergeson; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers; and three sisters. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Romero Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, 11:00 a.m., at Romero Funeral Home, Rev. Boyd Morerod officiating.
