Obituary for Boyd

John Franklin Boyd, M.D., age 78, died April 10, 1999, sustained by his inalterable faith and surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Jane Cotton Boyd. He is survived by his wife of three years, Edna Hubbart Boyd, and by his three sons and their families: Jay and Suzanne Boyd and children, Stephanie and Edward Boyd of Albuquerque; Jeff Boyd of Albuquerque and children, Justin and Shauna Boyd of Omaha, NE, and Curtis and Nancy Boyd of Houston, TX; as well as his stepsons and their families, Wes and Glen Hubbart of Albuquerque and Austin, TX. Dr. Boyd was in private orthopaedic practice in Albuquerque for 39 years, 1953-1992, as one of the early members of Albuquerque Orthopaedic Association. For 30 of those years, 1958-1988, he was also the orthopaedic physician for the UNM Athletic Department, caring for injuries in all athletic activities, working closely with the trainers, and traveling with the football and basketball teams. He also worked with the state group of the Ski Patrol for 15 years. In 1942, John Boyd took his BA degree from the College of Wooster in Ohio, followed by his MD degree from the University of Michigan in 1945. He completed an internship at Grace Hospital in Detroit, MI and a residency in orthopaedics at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. Locally, Dr. Boyd held staff membership at Presbyterian and St. Joseph's Hospitals, and, at UNM, was Clinical Associate Professor in the Orthopaedic Department. He was a former District Governor of the American College of Surgeons; a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of their board for Specialty Board Certification. Locally, he was on the Medical Advisory Committee at Carrie Tingley Hospital and on the Medical-Legal Panel of the NM Medical Society, in addition to numerous other medical societies and boards. Dr. Boyd was the recipient of the Hugh A. Cooper Award from the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation and an Award of Appreciation from the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. He was inducted into the UNM Athletic Hall of Honor and the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame, as well as receiving a Distinguished Service Award from the UNM Alumni Letterman's Association. A member of First Presbyterian Church since 1953, Dr. Boyd served as an Elder there and also on the boards of Menaul School, Cerebral Palsy, Family Service, Red Cross, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. At the time of his death, he was a member of the All Faiths Receiving Home Board of Directors and the College of Wooster Board of Trustees. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Paul Debenport officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Bovard, Hunt Burress, G.B. Moneymaker, Homer Musgrave, James Ritchie, Dick Bluestein, Ralph Dixon, Bob Gerding, Dean Furry and Irv Jordan.
